The Best Pizza In San Francisco

A Foodie's Quest For SF's Italian Pie
- Zack, a native San Franciscan

The Journey

A couple friends and I embarked on a journey to find the best pizza in San Francisco and here's what we found. It was actually a very difficult task in which we may not have agreed on the order or even the restaurant at all. And there were days where we felt certain types of pizzas called out to us more, like wanting something that felt like home, or wanting something meaty and hearty like a deep dish, or light and tasty like a pinsa.

I am writing this to show my appreciation for San Francisco's fine restaurants and pizza has the biggest place in my heart. I do hope others find this helpful as there is no monetary compensation for this site. All I ask is for you to go and eat San Francisco pizza.

Here's How We Ranked Them

  • #1 Tony's Napoletana

1570 Stockton St, San Francisco, CA 94133 [map]
    Website: https://tonyspizzanapoletana.com

When I think of a New York Pizza, I think of Joe's. When I think of San Francisco Pizza, I think of Tony's. This is the best pizza in town and world renown. Every time I come here, I see lines out the door. I usually grab a slice at their Tony's Coal Fired Pizza & Slice House and it's fairly quick and satisfying. As a San Francisco local, this is my favorite pizza spot.

San Francisco's Tony's Pizza Napoletana claimed the No. 19 spot on a list of the top 100 pizzerias around the world. Tony's was among a fraction of U.S. pizzerias in the ranking and the only California restaurant recognized in the roundup.

  • #2 Square Pie Guys

1077 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94103 [map]
    Website: https://squarepieguys.com

This is Detroit style pizza in San Francisco. The cheese is crunchy and crusty on the outside, but still goey on top. They are not afraid to collaborate and experiment with different ideas. We recently had the Sisig Pie Guys and Señor Sisig is one of my favorite food trucks in the San Francisco Bay Area. They keep things fresh by trying new ideas. Great filling pizza for when you're hungry.

  • #3 Pinsa Rossa

2101 Fillmore St, San Francisco, CA 94115 [map]
    Website: https://pinsarossa.com

The pinsa crust did not disappoint, it was chewy, light and airy. My favorite was the Prosciutto & Stracciatella and the Truffle Cheek pizza. The restaurant was very cozy and had a nice ambiance. The dough is mixed daily and consisted of a high protein blend of rice, soy and wheat flours left to rise for 3 days. The crust is said to be healthier and easier to digest. This is my go to spot for an excellent pizza that won't make me stuffed and bloated.

Pinsa Rossa provides low-gluten pizza alternative from Rome with authentic Italian chef, situated in the beautiful Fillmore neighborhood.

  • #4 DAMNFiNE Pizza

3410 Judah St, San Francisco, CA 94122 [map]

I saw this on Check Please Bay Area and wanted to try it out. There's good outdoor seating and also some indoor seating that felt tight. The ambiance is nice and chill. Pizza came out immediately upon ordering. We had olives, which were nicely warmed and lightly seasoned with some orange and almonds. The pizza was chewy and fluffy which I really. I also enjoyed their full bar and ordered a few cocktails. We ordered the Acapulco and the Burrata pizza which was very on point.

  • #5 Del Popolo

855 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94108 [map]
    Website: https://www.delpopolosf.com

Classic Neapolitan pizza with a great soft chewy dough and crust. Lots of flavor in every bite. Nothing bad to say about their pizza. Location near Union Square.

Del Popolo has been offering wood-fired pizza since 2012, according to its website. It originally launched as a mobile restaurant but opened its brick-and-mortar location on Bush Street in Nob Hill in 2015, the restaurant stated.

  • #6 Casey's Pizza

1170 4th St, San Francisco, CA 94158 [map]
    Website: https://www.caseyspizzas.com

These guys started off with just a food truck and this is how I got to love them as they were right outside my office downtown during lunch time. They now have a brick and mortar and serving up nice thin crust pizza. My favorites are the Arugula and Bacon Kale. It's conveniently located in the Mission Bay area.
